Serie A relegation-threatened Parma have appointed former Romanian defender Cristian Chivu as their new head coach on a one-and-a-half-year deal.

Parma have decided to sack Fabio Pecchia as coach on Monday after the team suffered four consecutive league defeats and fell into the relegation zone.

Romano reports that the 44-year-old Chivu’s has signed a contract to become head coach of Parma until June 2026. And is ready to take charge of a team in Serie A for the first time. 

Chivu, who played for Roma and Inter Milan for a combined ten years, has never coached a senior team before. With his previous coaching roles being Inter’s youth teams at the U14, U17, U18 and U19 levels.

Pecchia, who took Parma to promotion by winning the Serie B title in 2023-24, was officially relieve of his duties on Monday evening following a run of four consecutive losses in Serie A. 

The team have not won in the league this calendar year, with their last victory coming 10-man Monza on December 28. 

Parma currently sit in 18th place in the Serie A table with a tally of 20 points after 25 matches, which means that Chivu has 13 games remaining to steer the ship away from relegation.
